What is a snow globe? That is, some porcelain flower decorations are fixed in a hollow glass sphere or a glass cover with a bottom and filled with a few “snowflakes”. Nowadays, most snow globes have lighting and music effects, which is a kind of artistic decoration.
The history of snow globes
In the late 19th century, Erwin Perzy, a maker of surgical instruments, invented and patented Schneekugel. When he tried to enhance the candlelight of Schusterkugel with pellets made of different materials, the effect reminded him of snowfall. Finally, he built his first scene snow globe out of a model of Mariazell Cathedral. Snowballs were commonly used in advertising in the United States in the 1940s; Religious snowballs were a joint gift to Roman Catholic children in Europe.
Snow globes began to be made of plastic in the 1950s. It is available in various varieties, from mass-produced versions in China to Seiko versions in Austria. Snowballs come in various settings, including Christmas scenes, Disney characters, pop ICONS, animals, military figures, historical scenes, and more for special holiday souvenirs or exclusive collectibles
Since 2000, more and more luxury brands have followed the trend and used the snowball as a collection totem and symbol of their brand image.
What liquid is in a snow globe
Snow globes are made of glass, liquid, scenes, snowflakes, light bulbs, and bases. The original snowball consisted of a heavy leaded glass dome, but as technology improved, the glass became thinner and the base lighter (Formica).
The snowflakes in snowballs are made of gold leaf particles or insoluble soap flakes. At first, these “snowflakes” were filled with waste cotton wool, but later some chemicals were used, namely “artificial snow”.
The liquid in snowballs is of great concern. The first liquid used light oil to make the snowflake appear floating. For safety and aesthetic reasons, manufacturers gradually evolved into the water, antifreeze (ethylene glycol), and glycerin. As well as being environmentally friendly, the glycerine also slows the fall of snowflakes.
